The past can come back to bite you...
This is an interesting article. Apparently the Nixon administration came up with the same terrorism scenarios that we are now dealing with in the Bush administration. They proposed forcing airlines to beef up their security but knew that airlines would throw hissy fits about absorbing those costs. They proposed increased monitoring of foreign nationals traveling/living in the US, increased monitoring of vulnerable sites like public events, water sources, nuclear plants, etc., revisions to surveillance and information gathering...basically everything that we have already initiated or propose to initiate at the present, but they never followed-through on them. It's ironic. The past can really come back to bite you...

I think a lot of it has to do with Americans not being able to fully comprehend the fact that people hate us. We don't fully comprehend that others believe God condones killing for religious reasons. We also tend to forget or sensationalize past terrorist attacks such as Pearl Harbor, Oklahoma City, more recently 9/11 until it has this movie effect and people cease to remember the significance of it all. Japan last woke up what they labeled as the "sleeping giant" in World War II and I think the "sleeping giant" still lays asleep even after 9/11. It may have partially awoken when the US went after the real culprits but fell back asleep when Bush got side tracked with Iraq. We as a nation are fast asleep and I don't know if we will awaken until after it is too late.
