In the News: Library project wins...

I'm a big fan of public libraries. During my nearly 12 years in the Iowa City area, I've become very spoiled by the size and availability of materials at the Iowa City Public Library. In fact, I've become so spoiled that I don't even bother going to local libraries. Whatever they have I've usually already read or am not interested in reading. They don't come near the quantity of movies and CD's for checking out in Iowa City. So I was happy to hear that one of the smaller libraries in the area, for Coralville (the other half of this metro area), won enough votes to move forward on a huge library expansion. They will more than double their size, add much better areas for children and even build an underground parking facility. Kudos to the voting citizens who supported this!

Now if they would only build a parking facility near the Iowa City library....most of us have to park several blocks away because of lack of parking spaces....

I have a problem with libraries. Sometime since my youth, they seem to have changed their focus to creating a welfare system for movie, computer, and magazine users or readers who can't afford to own or rent them, instead of focusing on research and literature. Most libraries now have large video collections, banks of computers where users have the right to surf porn and stacks of magazines, yet their historical collection hasn't seen a dust cloth much less than an addition in the last decade. I wish I could opt out of paying for them with my tax dollars.

Hmm...I have to agree that some are getting large collections of movies, but what I enjoyed most about the Iowa City collection were the classics that are in a much better condition for playing than ones you can rent at the video store - if the video store even still carries it! I've watched Fiddler on the Roof, nearly every Shirley Temple movie and as well as other classics by checking them out at the library. The Iowa City library even has a full collection of Nova tapes!

I would be in favor of preserving classic movies and educational programs like NOVA but they seem to carry lots of movies like "8 Mile" and "White Chicks."
