That LP connection...

Last Friday, having left early, I decided to dash out to Best Buy and get a pocket PC. I had been comparison shopping a specific model all week long and finally decided it was worth the investment if it helps me keep track of my schedule and tasks. This little gadget would combine my personal calendar with my work calendar and thus I could, optimistically, avoid having more "little things" slip through the cracks. So, I arrived at Best Buy, and was quickly assisted by a sales rep only to discover that they had no inventory in stock (and hadn't removed their "in stock" card). Damn! They checked their computers and said that a nearby city had three still in-stock and then started looking even beyond that. I immediately said no, because I wasn't going to make a two-hour drive for a pocket PC. I called Staples and inquired about their stock, having just been in that store the previous day. Unfortunately I missed reserving their last model by ten minutes. Figures. I called Office Depot - no luck; Target (a bit of a stretch - I know) - no luck. So, you guessed it...I drove to the next city, but that was okay because I called ahead to reserve a model. Five minutes in and out of there and I had myself a pocket PC with a two-year service plan. Next task: call Becky to let her know I was in town and available for dinner. LOL Why not? It could be a surprise.

After leaving a few messages I spotted a store across the roadway that was advertising half-priced books, used CD's, movies and, most importantly, LPs. Yes! I could finally get some more records to play on my spiffy new stereo. I only spent 30 minutes in there but it was dangerous... I didn't allow myself a basket or cart because I knew I'd go overboard. If I could carry it, I could buy it. LOL So, I ended up with a handful of records (folk & classical music), one CD (I'd been searching for that album for over a year!), and two books. Not bad! I know I'll be going back again. Where else can you get good condition LPs for only a buck??

I did end up finally meeting Becky for dinner. She laughed at my carrying my pocket PC with me even though it had the stickers still on it and no battery. I just couldn't make myself leave it in the truck. That kind of investment was too risky to leave it in plain sight!

I love the sound of a record especially on older Christmas music. A CD just sounds cold and artificial when compared to the scratchy mellow sound of a record. The hardest part is finding replacement needles. They are either non-existant or cost a fortune.

Funny thing happened in the store the other day. A man buying a calculator dropped it while in the checkout line. He picked it up and said, "It turned itself on." He then spent the next five minutes punching buttons through the plastic trying to turn it off. I just couldn't bring myself to tell him that all calculators come with stickers on the LCD screen to simulate the size of the numbers should it actually be on. He was still punching buttons as he walked out of the store.
