The Java House...
Since becoming addicted to coffee last year, there have been several coffee counters installed around campus that enable me to continue my vice. One such counter is staffed by a popular coffee house in town called The Java House. At first, the coffee at The Java House seemed too strong for my taste, but as my cravings grew and as Starbucks became too bland, I found myself turning back to The Java House for tasty beverages.
Standing at this coffee counter is a memorable experience. Not only do you have to suffer from the sight of gourmet pastries, sweets and the smell of coffee, but the quirkyness of the staff will linger in your mind for some time. I don't know where the owners find these kids but they crack me up! Over the past year, an occasional sign appears next to their service counter that captures your attention and doesn't let go. These aren't just any signs, but frequently are literary masterpieces. The most recent one goes something like this....
"Abandon all hope ye who sweeten here...
Midway upon a shift on Saturday
I found myself in a kiosk bare
For the vanilla powder had been lost..."
There was another stanza to it (referring to "potables") but I can only recall the first half. Everyday I stand there and read that sign and everyday I find myself liking it more and more. It's so nice to have something unique to greet you as you yawn your way down the hospital corridors to your office. ;)
