A saga's end...
Well, the Muggle world was all abuzz this past week by the release of the final Harry Potter book - The Deathly Hallows. I can only imagine the backaches of postal staff everywhere as they handled the extra weight of millions of pre-ordered books, packing them carefully into their postal delivery bags. At 759 pages, a collection of books in a bag would add considerable weight compared to normal deliveries. However, I am duly grateful to my postman for not only delivering the book on time but even earlier in the day than I was expecting!! I fully anticipated having to wait on the front porch, relaxing into a lawn chair as I took up "postal watch", but he surprised me. Even once I had collected by coveted package from the mailbox, I did not immediately open it but savored the presence of the final piece of the story. Besides, I was watching the end of A Few Good Men and wanted to see Jack Nicholson explode with "You can't handle the truth!"
Once the movie was over, I prepared beverages and snacks for the long day of reading ahead of me before ceremoniously opening the package. I immediately removed the book jacket in order to prevent tears before settling on the couch. I did not rush through the pages deliberately, but was amazed that by midnight, I had all but 40 pages of the book. It was so well written that it was easy to lose yourself in the story and the pages flew by my nose as Harry battled the Death Eaters and the evil Lor Voldemort over and over again. Did you expect it to end quickly? Please...of course there were multiple confrontations!
However, no endings revealed here. I will only say that J.K. Rowling did a good job of letting fans develop their own theories in the time preceding the book's release and I think everyone will be surprised by various characters' actions.
So, now that curiousity has been satisfied and the story of Harry Potter is done, my book will join the others on the bookshelf to be enjoyed again another day.
Now I need a nap!

I just finished my copy about an hour ago, and I too feel exhausted. I loved the book--definitely the best out of the series. You're right about the writing and getting fully engrossed in the story. My only difficulty came at the very end. I won't give anything away, but I left feeling like there was something missing in the end...or...maybe it's just that being a huge fan of the series, having read the entire series at least three times (not counting #7), and knowing the characters as well as I know myself...maybe I just felt a little strange, knowing it was over. Like you said, it's the end of a saga...
If it wasn't for that last school paper I had to get finished by tomorrow night, I would have turned right back to the first page and started all over again. I guarantee I'll read it at least two more times, this year, before it finally starts to collect dust on my shelf.
Now that it is over, I'm on the lookout for a complete series at a garage sale. Everyone seems to enjoy them so I probably should jump up on the bandwagon now that it is supposedly stopped.
