Another dose of philosophy

"It is virtually impossible in many instances to know what we believe in daily life until we engage others in dialogue. Likewise, to discover our philosophical views, we must engage with ourselves, with the lives we already lead."

Do you ever notice that you think you know your opinion on something, but then during a conversation with a friend or coworker, you suddenly realize that you may believe something else? It may not be too far from what you initially thought you believed, but it is different. I didn't think this quote was true until that happened once to me. It was very bizarre. Since then it's happened several additional times. I think sometimes we need the intellectual stimulus of discussion to truly formulate our opinions in their entirety. Otherwise all we have are incomplete thoughts...a thought still in infancy, you might say.

For me, until you actually have to defend a belief or an idea, you never really think too deeply about it. Many times I have simply thought a certain way about something until I wanted to defend it and found it not defendable. Maybe that is why I always have loved debate.
