The destruction begins!

I haven't done much on my house since I returned from Arizona several weeks ago. The first few weeks I seemed to sleep a lot and I guess my body was still in "vacation" mode. The last week or so I have been pretty sick. It figures. I went two years without anything more serious than a few sniffles, and then last weekend, the cold I apparently caught at some point knocked me flat. I've spent most of my days fighting vertigo from congestion and my general feeling of "ick" is a constant companion. I'm ready for this to be over!

So, given all of that, I finally felt I could start on some kitchen destruction this weekend. On Friday evening I tore down one of the upper cabinets in my kitchen, revealing a 1/4-inch deep hole in the wall. That wall had been covered with sheetrock at some point in the past. What I didn't realize is that the sheetrock, for some STRANGE reason, was installed over perfectly good paneling. At the sight of that small area of paneling, my plans for the kitchen renovations became much easier. No longer do I have to worry about having to redo that wall, now I can simply knock off the 1/4-inch sheetrock and paint the paneling. That, I can handle. The ceiling is another matter. The idea I had of replacing it isn't going to fly so I'll have to explore other options. But that's okay...everything is a work in progress until it's finished. I have no concrete plans in mind other than the broad goal of "fixing it up pretty". Although I tore down the cabinet, I don't plan on starting in that corner. However, in order to get to the wall behind the refrigeration, I had to move it and there was no other place but right where that cabinet was to place it. The cabinet would have had to come down anyway -- the ceiling tiles went underneat it, unlike the other cabinets in the kitchen. It was obviously added at a later date. So, to end this rambling of thoughts, I can finally go ahead and buy the paint for the walls and cupboards. I love the miraculous transformation paint can make to a room. I'm looking forward to starting!
