Those voices are speaking...

I picked up a few new CD's this month: Staind, Nickelback, & Disturbed. I'm not real jazzed about the new Disturbed CD but have really liked Staind and most of the Nickelback. Of course, there's always one song that sticks in your mind and this week has been no exception. The lyrics of a Staind song has been playing over and over and over like a broken record and I find myself wanting to listen to it constantly. Just so I can torture everyone else, I'm posting them below. Pardon the language, I'm only quoting...

Please

Can't you see that I'm sick of this?
Chances are you're oblivious to how I feel
Sitting on your throne, and I'm sure that I'm not alone

Tell me please.
Who the fuck did you want me to be?
Was it something that I couldn't see?
Never knew this would be so political
And please, I'm still wearing this miserable skin
And it's starting to tear from within
But it's obvious that doesn't bother you so please

I didn't think that you'd sell me out
Now I know what you're all about
You might feel in control of things
But you're not holding all the strings

Tell me please.
Who the fuck did you want me to be?
Was it something that I couldn't see?
Never knew this would be so political
And please, I'm still wearing this miserable skin
And it's starting to tear from within
But it's obvious that doesn't matter to you

I've swallowed all your answers
I've swallowed all my pride
You've used up all your chances
Can't keep this all inside

Tell me please
Who the fuck did you want me to be?
Was it something that I couldn't see?
Never knew this would be so political
And please, I'm still wearing this miserable skin
and it's starting to tear from within
But it's obvious that doesn't bother you
So please don't keep telling me that it's ok
I don't buy all the shit that you say
And quite honestly I'm fucking sick of it.
So please if I cut off this nose from my face
Then I wouldn't feel so out of place
But it still wouldn't be quite enough for you
So please.

I get what they're saying. It's difficult to eradicate yourself from a specific role especially if what you've been giving to the relationship is all the other person wants from you. You suffocate in that role because it's only a small portion of your character. I've been in that position and it does feel like your skin is about to burst with all the stuff you want to give and can't. I guess I got hooked on the song by the chorus, "Tell me please. Who the fuck did you want me to be? Was it something that I couldn't see? Never knew this would be so political And please, I'm still wearing this miserable skin and it's starting to tear from within But it's obvious that doesn't bother you..." It just speaks to me. I'm sure the writer had more in mind with the rest of the lyrics, but I'll take from it what I can identify with.

I think good lyrics died over a decade ago. When I think of good lyrics, I think of the likes of John Prine, John Denver, etc. Maybe it is a John thing. Anyway, I can't imagine JD singing a song entitled, "Take Me Fucking Home Country Roads."

Sorry but I don't think I will be buying a fucking Staind CD anytime soon. Now they have me doing it! ;)

Since I rarely use strong swear words, I would have replaced f*** with "hell". lol But, those are the lyrics and I suppose the use of a stronger swear word implies stronger emotion. To see the lyrics in print without the associated music kinda removes the emotion being used, in my opinion. I wouldn't judge too much until you hear the song.

I do like John Denver though. "Take Me Home Country Roads" is my favorite of his, followed by some of his X-mas music.

Yeah I know, if I heard it I might change my mind. But like I said yesterday, I still stuck in the 70's and 80's so the chances are probably better that I would win the Powerball lottery.

Someone else that knows Prine? I thought I was the only one. I remember the last Prine concert I went too. I was the youngest one there by about thirty years. I got his Anthology album autographed and talked with him back stage for awhile. It was worth it.
