Protesting immigrant legislation

I'm a bit torn on this issue. On the one hand, I believe an illegal immigrant has neither rights nor protection in America. If that person has filed for citizenship in the U.S., then that's a different story and they should be granted a form of "visitor" status for a specified period of time while completing citizenship requirements. However, if they are enjoying the benefits of U.S. living without having to pay taxes like the rest of us do, then kick them out!

I'm also concerned about this country's ability to support such a large population while not sacrificing our farm lands or forests. So much of our country is being urbanized that we are jeopardizing wildlife and flora species. In taking in such a large number of illegal immigrants, who will continue to come no matter what legislation is made, we continue to enganger the future of our land.

Just a few initial thoughts after reading about the protests...

I haven't been reading much on this issue but I must say that if it is causing thousands of illegal immigrants to protest in the streets, it must be okay. I just hope somebody is taking down their names.

Being married to an legal immigrant, I must say all the illegal immigrants really gum up the system for everyone else.

They do indeed gum it up. But, it's such a convoluted issue, there is no oen answer.

I used to be on the "round 'em up and deport 'em' bandwagon. Not so much anymore.

The part of the new legislation I really don't like is that religious organizations that get any federal funds (such as the Catholic church in LA for homeless assistance and other programs) will be required to check the immigration status of anyone getting help from church programs, and report on them, or have their funding cut off.

As if the Catholic Church in America, indeed just about any church, is going to turn away someone in need just because they can't verify immigration status. What a stupid part of the legislation, and it needs to be taken out before it becomes law.
