Give an Inch, They'll Take a Mile
I was catching up on all of my weekend CNN digests and couldn't believe some of the stuff in there - people getting HIV- and Hepatitus-infected tissues in transplants and a spanish version of the "Star Spangled Banner" being released. Regarding the first - ewwwww! Regarding the second...excuse me? I'm a little more lenient than some of my fellow bloggers about immigration issues, but the fuss, drama and constant marches is really starting to annoy me and I'm ready to defect to the "let's build a damn wall and oust them all" camp. I really don't have an issue with those who have come to America and followed the required procedures for becoming a citizen. It's the illegal ones who are getting on my last nerve with their whining, pouting and expressions of outrage at our presumption to make them leave. They have no legal leg to stand on so stuff it.
We received a notification at work last week that those employees who choose to participate in the "walk out for immigration" today would have to first be approved for vacation time to be away from the office. It was the first I'd heard of a walk out. Now I hear that illegal immigrants are planning a boycott from purchasing services or etc in order to try to impact the economy. I suppose they might harm Walmart's profit line, but not much else. Okay, that was probably uncalled for but, as I said, I'm tired of the nonsense.

True they are illegal, true they have no legal right to be here and yes true there is a spanish version of the star spangled banner making the rounds. However and a big However at that there is alot more being affected by the boycott/walk out today than sales at wal mart, i work for a billion dollar company that was built on the backs of illegal immigrants and we were all but crippled today by this walkout, several major companies were. As to the star spangled banner in spanish i say bravo it wasnt that long ago that my ancestors were singing it loud and proud in high german, this is a nation that is built on immigrants with no official language due to our diverse population we all know there are some bad seeds making there way across our borders but there are good honest hard working folks too!! not meaning to be hard on ya just want us all to remember that we need this cheap labor or everything from our lattes to our vehicles would become soo expensive no one would want them anymore.
The U.S. economy is supply and demand. We don't need cheap labor. We simply need everyone to play by the same rules. Companies that depend on illegal border crossers(I think 'illegal immigrant' is an oxymoron), need to set their prices according to supply and demand. By going around it, they short circuit the system and provide a welcoming mat for illegals border crossers who then use more of our natural and structural resources. It also provides an atmosphere where illegals can be taken advantage of in deplorable ways much like slavery. We eliminate our illegal border crossing issues and yes, our fruit, vegetable and meat prices may go up but they will still probably be less than what the rest of the industrialized world pays because they don't have access to slave labor.
As for the Spanish version of the Star Spangled Banner, I think Teddy Roosevelt said it best:
"We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile. We have room for but one language here and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, and American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding house; and we have room for but one soul [sic] loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people."
Initially I was much more lenient in thought, much like your own Win, but I firmly believe, and have always believed, that if illegal "border crossers" want legal rights in American, then they need to become legal citizens and pay their share of taxes. I don't think it's right that they can work in the U.S., enjoying the benefits of this country, and not pay their due like the rest of us.
I just read a splurb in today's Register where there is now an influx of child illegal border crossers as parents already illegally in the country are now starting to smuggle their children. Next it will be brothers, aunts, uncles, grandparents, neices. It just won't end.
