A little Iowa history...

Isn't interesting the things you learn about your own state...when you least expect it? Check out this excerpt from Midwest Living's "Best of the Midwest" issue:

"It's time for one of my favorite events anywhere, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. There's probably been more written about this event than any other Iowa topic outside of how the weather is affecting a given year's corn crop. Much of the credit begins with State Fair, the enormously popular 1932 novel by Des Moines Register reporter and editorial writer Philip Duffield Stong (1899-1957), which fueled three feature films.

Iowa held its first state (actually, territory) fair in aptly named Fairfield back in 1854. The event moved to Des Moines in 1879, and the current fairgrounds was dedicated in 1886....."

Well, I'll be darned...

...and Stong was born in Pittsburg, Iowa. I'm guessing you also know where that is. I believe I have seen a sign at the fairgrounds before stating that it was the site of the first State Fair.

I've never been to the Fairfield fairgrounds, but yes, I knew Stong was born in Pittsburg.
