Revisiting the birthday blues...
A few months ago I blogged about my crappy birthday when turning 32. You know, I sometimes wonder if all medical science is nothing by theories and guesswork. I had mentioned that I already ate pretty well. I really didn't think I was close to developing full diabetes but hey, what do I know, I'm just the patient. So, I got the glucometer and somewhat faithfully tested my glucose levels for several months. The results? NORMAL. Yep, that's right. Normal. My doctor was perplexed. My insulin levels indicate eminent diabetes but my glucose readings indicate that everything's just hunky dory in insulin/glucose land. I imagine it's because I very faithfully take my medication to regulate insulin (as much as medication can, anyway) but seriously people....why don't doctors listen to their patients?
So, why am I revisiting this issue? Well, my insurance company recently contacted me about the brand of glucometer that I use. Apparently it will no longer be on the preferred list, which meant that my co-pay amounts would double for refills of the testing strips. OUCH! So that's why my January refill cost so much! I had wondered about that and it makes sense now but why couldn't the insurance company have recommended a different brand at the time I got it, knowing that it would no longer be the preferred model? Sheesh. SO...I contacted my physician and explained that I would need to get a different glucometer, that the insurance company is offering free replacements with preferred brands, and that I'd be contacting her later about a new testing strip and lancet prescription request (as soon as I knew what I needed). I also reminded her that my readings had continued to be in the normal range and updated some other information. Her response? NO MORE GLUCOMETER! Yes! She doesn't see the need to continue checking glucose levels when they're normal.
Have a I mentioned yet that I love my doctor?
