Roofing...for the last time...

I've finally moved on to the last roofing project. It's a doozy but will be well worth the investment. We're still in the midst of shingling but here is what we've got for now.

BEFORE - shingles in various stages of breaking off. No, I still haven't taken down the Christmas garland but it's time is coming very soon.

DURING - We discovered that two walls had three layers of shingles/cedar shakes with the surface underneath (no sheeting) looking as shown here. You could see the backside of the interior wall through the slats. The other two walls had two layers of just shingles with solid, yet pieced, boarding underneath. I was standing on the existing kitchen roof (five layers of shingles and tar with the same slatted board for the surface underneath) when I took this. The following weekend it, too, was ripped off, and now has a new covering of shingles. No photos of that...yet.

AFTER -- House wrapped to await shingling in July, which is when we can next coordinate free time. I did persuade Dad to cut open the sheeting around one window so that I could put a fan in it on cool nights. The upstairs gets very toasty in summer.

What comes next? Well, I'll be painting the house next week if the weather cooperates. This week will be adventures with the power washer to remove as much loose paint (quite a bit) as possible. I already started scraping to test how difficult it would be, which ended up being very difficult. I'll let the power washer do most of my job for me!
